The Government has launched a new survey on the 2nd March asking people for their views on banning under 16s from social media. You can share your views here Growing up in the online world: a national consultation – GOV.UK.
The consultation will stay open for 3 months ahead of a decision being made by the Government. The House of Lords has already voted in favour of a full ban for under-16s.
It follows a decision to ban under 16s in Australia from social media and a tightening up of laws relating to online safety and harm in the UK.
As well as an outright ban the Government is also looking at other options such as overnight curfews for social networks and limiting app functions for young people.
The move follows a growing awareness of the impact of social media on young people as well as a better understanding of online harm affecting people of all ages.
In Cornwall, more than 2,600 cyber offences were recorded between 1st January 2025 and 31st December 2025 – an increase of 26% on the year before. 18% of cyber crimes involve a victim under the aged of 18 in Cornwall, however the biggest increase in reported offences are in people aged 26 to 45.
