That’s the message from Cornwall Council’s Trading Standards team who are urging shoppers to stay vigilant and shop wisely.
While there may be some bargains to be had in the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, you could find yourself falling for scams or rushing into purchases you may regret.
Here are a few tips to help you shop smart and make sure you’re getting a good deal.
1. Do your research
Compare prices across different retailers and previous selling prices to ensure you’re getting the best deal. Some retailers increase the price of goods in the months ahead of sales, to make it appear that items are cheaper than they appear.
Read customer reviews and ratings for products and sellers and also factor in the cost of delivery, which may vary considerably from retailer to retailer.
Ensure the quality of the product matches the price and beware of counterfeit items.
2. Be wary of scams
Watch out for suspicious links and avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails or messages; they could lead to phishing websites.
Make sure the website URL starts with https:// to ensure it is secure.
And remember, if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers will often create fake websites in advance of the sales, taking payments for goods that never arrive.
3. Protect your personal information
Always use secure payment methods such as credit cards or trusted payment services such as PayPal that offer some form of buyer or fraud protection.
Do not make purchases over public Wi-Fi – use a secure, private connection instead.
4. Know your consumer rights
Check the seller’s return and refund policies, and if there is a warranty. That way you know what your rights are if the goods turn out to be not what you expected or faulty.
Also check that the retailer has the item in stock, ready for dispatch, as well as the delivery terms and conditions so you know how long it might take to arrive.
5. Budget wisely
It’s easy to get carried away. Work out what you can afford, set yourself a budget and stick to it.
Before you start shopping, make a list of what you need and try to avoid impulsive purchases. Don’t be misled into buying an item just because the retailer is claiming a massive discount.
Councillor Martyn Alvey, the portfolio holder responsible for Public Protection at Cornwall Council, said: “Being scammed can be an embarrassing and costly experience.
“We know there are good deals out there but unfortunately if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
“Please make sure you do your research. Check that the seller is legitimate before making purchases and try not to rush into anything.”
