Victims of domestic abuse in Cornwall will receive improved support through a new specialist court designed to make the court process less overwhelming and more efficient.
The Specialist Domestic Abuse Court (SDAC) launches this month (October 2026) and will hear domestic abuse cases at dedicated court sessions in Truro and Bodmin Magistrates’ Courts.
It brings together criminal justice agencies and support services to ensure victims and survivors receive specialist help throughout the court process.
It also aims to improve the way organisations work together and ensure those committing domestic abuse face the consequences of their actions.
Victims will have access to support from Independent Domestic Violence Advisors (IDVAs), who can provide practical and emotional support, help them understand what to expect, and make sure their safety and wellbeing remain at the centre of decisions.
The specialist court is also expected to help cases move through the system more efficiently and reduce delays.
Cllr Thalia Marrington, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Public Health, said:
“Domestic abuse can have a lasting impact on victims, survivors and their families, and seeking help can be incredibly difficult.
“This new specialist court is about making sure people get the support they need at every stage of the justice process. By bringing together the courts, police, support organisations and safeguarding partners, we can provide a more coordinated response that puts victims’ safety and wellbeing first.
“We want people affected by domestic abuse to feel listened to, supported and confident that they will be taken seriously. The Specialist Domestic Abuse Court is an important step forward in helping achieve that and strengthening our response to domestic abuse across Cornwall.”
The launch follows months of preparation by local partners, including the recruitment of additional specialist support workers and the introduction of new information sharing arrangements.
