Safer Penzance August Highlights

6 September 2023

County Lines

Penzance Neighbourhood team enlisted the help of the Prevent and Detect, No Excuses, and the Drone teams to conduct a warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act linked to County Lines. This was an organised local day of action around drugs and drug driving.

The warrant was very successful in two males being arrested and currently on bail and a significant amount of money and believed class A drugs being seized. We have had numerous reports of ASB linked to drug dealing in the area and reports of cuckooing so it was really important for us to safeguard those involved and act.  Another male was also arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply and for driving a motor vehicle with a proportion of a controlled drug above the specified limit.

Tackling Dangerous Drugs Networks are a priority for us and we will continue to do so. Please keep helping by reporting crimes to us. They can use the Single online reporting system through the Devon and Cornwall Website but it really is important in us building an intelligence picture and being able to act.

Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB)

We have noted an increase of ASB in the Town and are allocating resources appropriately to nip the issues in the bud.

Claire, our new dedicated ASB Caseworker has been out patrolling Penzance daily, engaging with the community and businesses to gather intelligence which she can use to tackle ASB in the Town. In August warnings were issued to several individuals causing ASB in the Town alongside a Community Protection Warning (CPW) to somebody who was repeatedly aggressively begging.

Graffiti

The two males arrested in Hayle in connection to Graffiti earlier this year both completed part of their Pathfinder deferred caution programme, with the consent of local businesses, they painted over graffiti in Causewayhead, Penzance. They are completing rehabilitative interventions through pathfinder and will be cleaning graffiti in other areas as well. The idea of the scheme is for offenders to account for their behaviour whilst addressing needs that are directly linked to their offending. Below are some before and after pictures.

Sports Sessions with Vulnerable Adults

A six week project took place with St Petrocs, Cornwall Councils Complex Needs Team and Plymouth Argyle Community Trust. The project positively engaged people in the Rough Sleeping Community ahead of the escalation of issues that often arise in the summer months in Penzance. You can read full details here

Young People Projects!

A noticeable decrease in ASB issues regarding young people was witnessed in August. We started a new partnership of youth providers in Penzance made up of agencies such as Young People Cornwall, Action for Children and the PZ and Newlyn Youth Project. Kesoberi Aka the Pz and Newlyn Youth Project ran a series of summer activities all over town. From Skateboard sesssions at Wherrytown, swimming at Jubilee Pool to Sessions and Rollerskating – there was loads going on! They will be back in their usual venues from 7th September.
